The Top 10 Medical Device Success Podcasts in 2020!
Over 14,500 downloads! A BIG THANK YOU to all the podcast listeners and contributors!! 35 podcasts were produced in our inaugural year of 2020. The MDS audience came from 99 countries including Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Zambia and Uruguay! And, several times this past year we almost cracked the top 100 management podcasts in the USA. This is sort of amazing considering the audience niche.
More important than numbers and rankings are the people that said “Thank You” for the timely and helpful information my contributors and I shared. It is humbling and motivating at the same time. Here is one of the most recent:
“I have listened to many episodes of Medical Device Success Podcast, and it is giving me lots of great input – and some of it has also already been put to use. So, thank you so very much for that!”
When I was getting organized to start the Medical Device Success podcast in the fall of 2019, Covid-19 was not even on the horizon. Initially, I had put together a complex outline for episodes on MedTech leadership, sales and marketing. However, this all went out the window as Covid-19 swept through continent after continent. Needless to say, a MedTech audience would need new guidance to help rise to the sales and marketing challenges posed by the pandemic. That is the direction we took and we aren’t finished yet.
So far, we have tackled big issues like:
- Virtual events and tradeshows
- Virtual selling, virtual sales tools and the virtual sales process
- Demand generation, CRM and marketing automation
Coming up we have:
- More Demand Generation because this is so critical to the success of companies going forward.
- The Future and the New Normal for MedTech
- And some fun….like a successful winemaker that is a MedTech professional
We also created a community called MedTech Leaders (medtechleaders.net) where executives and sales and marketing professionals can get together to help each other out with best practices, problems, solutions, ideas and successes. This is supported by the live events by subject matter experts that eventually become the podcasts and video casts.
Need to get away from the TV this weekend? Below is a list of the top 10 podcasts by downloads. In this more detailed listing of the top 10, I also give a brief description of the podcast, what it means and the contributor. Note that older podcasts while still relevant, have a download advantage over younger podcasts so this ranking will change over time. To see all the podcasts click here. The titles of the podcasts below are also links to the podcast.
#1 Ep 4 – The Future of the Medical Device Industry in the Covid-19 Era, April 12, 2020.
This is an episode I did solo after a lot of research. You can see from the date that it was near the beginning of the pandemic. The MedTech community and the world didn’t know what to expect short term, medium term or long term. I tried to sort out the short- and medium-term issues. Looking back, it appears that my predictions were and are accurate.
#2 Ep 6 – Selling in a Covid-19 Word – New Sales Practices, April 26, 2020.
Close on the heels of Ep 4 is Ep 6. Very early in the pandemic MedTech sales forces found themselves shut out of doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. Becca Kiel of Bichsel Medical Marketing Group joined me to share what she had learned about new sales practices. We provided some serious sales guidance.
#3 Ep 10 – The Reopening, Covid-19 and what it means for Medical Devices, May 24, 2020.
This episode was another solo effort. Back in May 2020, we were hopeful of gaining control of the virus by late 2020. Our leaders had no clue as to how virulent or dangerous this virus was. So, we started talking about the reopening of the economy. My forecast at the time was that MedTech would still be stalled in the face of a reopening. Too much damage to the medical ecosystem had been done. If you weren’t in the business of PPE, testing and ICU products/services, you were in trouble.
#4 Ep 5 – Make Your Virtual PowerPoint Presentation Powerful in this Covid-19 World, April 19, 2020.
Now we find ourselves trying to conduct sales calls and more meetings virtually. In this episode David Paradi of ThinkOutSideTheSlide.Com teamed gave us a master class on several easy PowerPoint tools to use to make virtual presentations much more effective and credible. No wonder it is ranked 4th. David Paradi is the master of this realm and I have him back when I start adding video casts for the MedTechLeaders community. See Ep 23. To see these tools in action makes the difference.
#5 Ep 11 – To the Medical Device Sales Battlefront in the Covid Era, May 31, 2020.
It is the end of May and I thought it was time to talk to a MedTech executive that was in the trenches fighting to survive. In this episode, Jeff Hydar shared his experience as VP Sales for start-up Kent Imaging. Jeff is now at another company. But the experience he shared rings true to this day.
I had seen Nick on a webinar and was really impressed with what he shared. He agreed to be interviewed. The nuances of virtual communication are not only interesting buy critical to understand if you are going to succeed in a more virtual world.
#7 Ep 7 – Video “Embedded” Emails for Sales and Marketing in a Covid-19 World, May 3, 2020.
This was a solo podcast where I shared what I had learned to date about the use of embedded videos in emails. They are a powerful tool. I use them frequently now. But what I think is a better podcast/video cast is Ep 25 where I interview Jeff Howell, Direct of Growth at AlayaCare. It is impressive to see in video how Jeff makes embedded videos help him succeed. They are easy to do, effective and inexpensive. One of my community members started using them and doubled his previous open rate.
#8 Ep 2 – Covid-19 – Tradeshows and Events – How MedTech Can Respond, March 29, 2020.
This was my second podcast and my first interview. I am very thankful that Lisa Bichsel, Founder of Bichsel Medical Marketing Group was willing to work with me on this podcast. It created a foundation for all the episodes aimed at helping MedTech companies manage the challenges of the pandemic. Lisa gave very timely and detailed advice on how to get tradeshow management reorganized as they were being cancelled all around the world. You will see that there are numerous episodes where I collaborate with Lisa and other members of the BMMG team. They are a creative and hardworking group of professionals
#9 Ep 24 – Sales Super Stars – What Defines Them and Where Did They Come From? September 17, 2020.
This episode was a lot of fun. Kelly Clark and Barry Rodgers of Relentless Recruiting had conducted a survey of over 60 Life Science sales executives. Kelly called me up to see what I thought of the survey and I said, “We have to share this!” He agreed and we made the podcast/video cast. Some of the data is revealing. It demonstrates the trap many companies fall into when recruiting. This video cast is public at the Medical Device Success YouTube channel. No doubt this episode will continue to rise in the rankings as its information is timeless.
I have known Bill Rabourn, Founder and Managing Principal of Medical Consulting Group a long time. Bill and his team are unique in that they operate at the intersection of doctors’ practices, ambulatory surgical centers and medical devices. They consult and implement tactics for all three segments. I remembered their Patient Builder program from the past. It occurred to me that this could be an interesting tool for some MedTech companies trying to stand out from their competition.
While these are the top 10 episodes for now, many of the other episodes are full of great advice and useful tools from subject matter experts. From episode 19 they are not only podcasts but video casts. This is because many of the subject matter experts include slides that add a lot of value to the shared information. Right now, I reserve most video casts for the MedTech Leaders Community. However, I am making public several more on the YouTube channel.
Note that I am not compensated in any way by the people or related companies that I interview.
Thanks again for all the support. Never hesitate to contact me with questions or ideas. I look forward to another year of timely, helpful and insightful podcasts and video casts.
